Zermatt, Klein Matterhorn - 3885m/12,780ft - 360
degree mid-summer panorama

Having travelled throughout the Alps
and Himalayas I have no hesitation in stating that the view from Klein
Matterhorn is on the of the finest mountain panoramas in the World. On a clear
day it is possible to see forty peaks over 4000 metres (13,000ft) elevation and
200km (130 miles) distance to the Maritime Alps close to the Mediterranean sea.
As a comparison, to stand at the top you are higher than all the highest
mountains in Austria and New Zealand. Scroll your screen to the right to see all
of this very wide image.
Klein Matterhorn is easily reached year-round by spectacular
cable cars from Zermatt. Super ski runs are open from Klein
Matterhorn summer
and winter. Don't forget your
sun cream, sunglasses and warm clothes!
Our view begins looking south over the large
summer skiing area and the gentle snowy mound of the Gobba di Rollin 3899m.
Turning to the right, just beyond the summer ski area we are looking deep into
Italy. Monte Viso is just visible (3841m altitude - 150km away), and to
its right is the Gran Paradiso (60km away). Other featured mountains include Mont Blanc (highest mountain in
Europe - 70km away on the Italian/French border - 4807m/15,815ft), the Grand Combin 4314m, Dent d'Herens 4171m, the
world famous Matterhorn looms large although still 7km away (4478m/14,730ft
altitude - on the Swiss/Italian border), Dent Blanche 4357m, Ober Gabelhorn
4063m, Zinal Rothorn 4221m, Weisshorn 4506m, the deep Zermatt
valley at 1620m, the Dom 4546m, Taeschorn 4491m, Alphubel 4206m,
Allalinhorn 4027m, Rimpfischhorn 4199m, Strahlhorn 4190m, the
very close Breithorn (4164m altitude - only a mile distant), Pollux 4091m, Castor 4226m, and
turning right around over the summer snows to face south again - completing our 360!
