History
The Hotel Monte Rosa was the first hotel of the Matterhorn village; opened in
1839 by the village doctor as the only inn with three rooms, it was taken over
in 1853 by the Seiler Family. Its guests include Edward Whymper, the first
conqueror of the Matterhorn, as well as numerous other famous mountaineers. Over
the years, the hotel has been extended and refurbished on many occasions and
today it meets the standards of a discriminating clientele. Despite fundamental
transformations it has kept the homely ambience and charm of a turn-of-the
century alpine hotel. Various lounges and salons, the historical dining room –
one of the most beautiful in the Alps - , the billiard room and the Montrose Bar
reflect the aesthetic perception typical for the turn from the 19th to the 20th
century.
